Amanda Whittington's drama focuses on Mary, a 19-year-old grammar-school-educated young woman who discovers she is seven months pregnant. She has to leave her job and is forced by her domineering mother to go into a Church of England mother-and-baby home run by a formidable Matron. The girls in the home bond over a love of girl group records. Mary's solace is a teddy bear and a record player with her favourite discs. The music has a large part in the play, featuring songs from the period including those by The Ronettes and Dusty Springfield. The girls give birth but then realise they must give their babies up for adoption, causing Mary to begin a desperate fight.
